Pelangi Publishing Group (PPG) was founded in 1979 by a team of young entrepreneurs. Within a period of 37 years, the company has grown from strength to strength, publishing over 8,000 titles spanning multiple languages.
Our founders, Datuk Sum Kown Cheek, Mr. Cheah Kean Soon and Mr. Yap Chong Koy, were former teachers who saw the potential demand for locally written revision books in Bahasa Malaysia, the national language of Malaysia. At that time, there were only a handful of such books available in the market when the Cambridge Examination System was replaced by the local examination system and the medium of instruction was changed from English to Bahasa Malaysia. The partners’ primary objective back then was to assist students in their effort to prepare for the new examination system. As a result, translations of past-year examination papers with suggested model answers for core subjects, such as mathematics and science, became their first publications in 1979.
From its initial involvement in editing and illustration to its distinguished publishing, printing and distribution services at present, Pelangi Publishing Group Bhd. has become a full-fledged educational book publisher, continuously improving the quality of education in the region. Its listing on Bursa Malaysia in 2004 is a further testimony to its success as an educational book publisher.
In 2004 and 2005, the group continued its expansion to oversea markets, with the establishment of its subsidiary companies and regional offices in Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore and China. Over the years, the group has also seen export sales grow from strength to strength. Besides sales through its regional offices, Pelangi also exports its products to international markets including Hong Kong, Taiwan, Sri Lanka, Egypt, Vietnam, Philippines, Myanmar and New Zealand.
In 2009, the group incorporated a new subsidiary company in the United Kingdom (Dickens Publishing Ltd). Dickens Publishing is used as a focal point to venture into the European markets. Pelangi edged closer in reaching its goal of becoming a truly global educational publishing group.
In addition, Pelangi also engages in printing operations, teaching academies, multimedia and web-related businesses.
Today, Pelangi Publishing Group is a well-known brand name in publishing with an annual group turnover of over US$15 million and its publications in many different genres. Pelangi Publishing Group is without doubt a leading publishing group in the region today.
