Pelangi is the first Malaysian publisher to be awarded the ISO 9001: 2000 accreditation in publishing. This accreditation serves as a platform for the company to further enhance its overseas markets and place the company in a better position to meet any challenges that might arise.
Producing an average of 700 titles a year, academic and children’s books constitute the bulk of the titles, while translated books and other general titles make up the rest. Pelangi is also involved in multimedia and web-related services that deal in quality e-books, academic CD-ROMs, children’s CD-ROMs and DVDs. Besides that, the Pelangi product range includes novels, comics and teaching aids, among others.
The company is also the first homegrown publisher to be public listed in 2004. For the year ended September 2010, the Group revenue was RM50.6 million, while the Group’s profit before taxation was RM6.3 million. Renowned for its commitment to quality, the group has successfully secured long-term government contracts and exclusive publishing licenses that allow sizeable operations to reap economies of scale. Moreover, due to Pelangi being a household name and its commitment to quality, 80% of its customers are repeat purchasers of its products.
Annually, the company participates in more than 10 international book fairs, and has established publishing agreements with renowned international publishers and literary agencies like Disney, D.C. Comics, DK publishing, The Christopher Little Literacy Agency, Chandler Crawford Agency and Little, Brown Books for Young Readers. Pelangi has also translated best sellers like Harry Potter and Twilight into Bahasa Malaysia.
Pelangi was awarded the Superbrands in 2005 as well as the SMEs Best Brands in the Asia Pacific for 2009. Currently, Pelangi’s books are available in over 20 countries worldwide and this figure is set to increase from year to year.
